I want to take time away

Furlough

In certain situations, Chipotle may temporarily suspend operations due to circumstances beyond employees’ control. In these cases, employees may be placed on furlough rather than separated from employment.

This page provides an overview of Furlough leave. Furlough is determined by Chipotle based on business conditions and is not requested by employees.

More About Furlough

Furlough is an unpaid leave of absence that may be implemented when business operations are temporarily impacted.

Furlough Leave

  • Is unpaid
  • Is determined and initiated by Chipotle
  • May vary in duration depending on business conditions
  • May be used instead of termination during temporary closures or disruptions

The length of furlough will depend on the circumstances affecting operations.

Pay and Benefits During Leave

Furlough leave is unpaid.

Your benefits may continue while you are on leave. To maintain coverage, you are responsible for paying your portion of the premiums for any plans you’re enrolled in.

If you do not make required premium payments on time, your coverage may be canceled. You may also choose to cancel coverage during your leave.

If you return to work, any unpaid premium amounts will be repaid through payroll deductions over time until the balance is fully repaid.

What to Do...

Before Leave

Furlough is not requested in advance. If a furlough is implemented, Chipotle will communicate details, including timing, expectations, and next steps.

During Leave

  1. Follow all guidance and communications provided by Chipotle regarding your furlough status.
  2. Stay in contact with your manager as needed for updates on your work status and potential return timing.

Stay Informed

Furlough status and return-to-work timing may change based on business conditions. Be sure to review all communications from Chipotle so you understand your status and next steps.

Returning to Work

We're looking forward to seeing you back!

  1. Follow instructions from your manager or company communications regarding your return to work.
  2. Notify your manager if you have any questions or if your availability changes.

Return Timing May Change

Furlough duration may change based on business conditions. Stay in contact with your manager for updates on return timing.

What Happens if I Don’t Return?

If you decide not to return to work during your approved leave, you should notify your manager or HRBP at least two weeks before your scheduled return date. If you do not return or attempt to return to work following the end of your leave, you will be considered to have voluntarily resigned as of your leave end date.

Am I Eligible For Leave Benefits Through My State?

Some states provide leave benefits you may be eligible to receive. If your leave involves a medical leave or FMLA request, our leave administration partner The Hartford may help identify whether state benefits apply and guide you on next steps.

If eligible, you may need to file a claim directly with your state. Chipotle leave benefits and state benefits may run at the same time and are coordinated so total payments do not exceed 100% of your pre-leave earnings.
