I want to take time away

Additional Leave Programs

The following leave programs may provide you additional options and flexibility to manage your unique circumstances. You do not need to file a claim with Unum for these types of leaves. For additional details or information on other Leave types available, please refer to Leaves of Absence and Other Time Off Policy or contact the HR Benefits Team at email.

Bereavement Leave

We offer Bereavement Leave so Associates can take paid time off for grieving and making necessary arrangements following the loss of a family member. Family members include an Associate’s spouse, domestic partner, child, parent, stepparent, parent-in-law, grandparent, great-grandparent, step-grandparent, grandparent-in-law, grandchild, sibling, sibling-in-law, stepsibling, or legal guardians. Associates may take up to two weeks (10 days) of paid time off after the loss of a spouse, domestic partner, or child, and up to one week (5 days) of paid time off after the loss of any other qualifying family member. Bereavement Leave must be taken within 60 days of a loss. An Associate must notify their manager and record their Bereavement time in Self Service.

We provide additional unpaid time for the loss of a child by homicide or suicide or for reasons related to reproductive loss. For more detail, visit Leaves of Absence and Other Time Off Policy.

Before leave

We support our Associates who serve in the military. Military Leave policy provides job-protected leave under the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA) as well as financial support through paid leave benefits. Eligible Associates needing time off to attend to certain military service obligations may receive supplemental pay equal to the difference between their normal base pay and their military pay (if we exceeds the military compensation) for up to 26 calendar weeks per year.

Request your leave. To request Military Leave, Associates must complete the Leave of Absence form and submit it to email after discussing the need with their manager and Human Resources Business Partner.

Am I Eligible For Leave Benefits Through My State?

Some states provide leave benefits that you may be entitled to. When you file a leave claim, Unum will let you know if you are eligible for any state benefits. If applicable, you’ll need to file a claim directly with your state. Company-provided leave benefits are generally offset by statutory benefits and run concurrently. You should review the Leaves of Absence and Other Time Off Policy for additional information.

How Does FMLA Interact with Leave Benefits?

The Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) provides up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave for a variety of circumstances. You’re eligible for FMLA if you have worked for at least 12 months and have worked 1,250 hours during the previous 12-month period. FMLA is taken concurrently with other types of leave. If you have exhausted FMLA or are not yet eligible for FMLA, you may be eligible for job protection through Supplemental Medical Leave.
